It’s 1967, and America is in the middle of a war.
After the North Vietnamese army overthrew French rule in Vietnam and gained their own territory, they begin to turn their focus to the South. They create the Ho Chi Minh trail, a route that they use to supply the Viet Cong in South Vietnam. President Kennedy pledges support to the democratic Southern Vietnamese against the Viet Cong and sends thousands of troops into Southeast Asia. At the same time, the Soviet Union is sending support to the Viet Cong.
Soon after the U.S. becomes involved, a ship is attacked by the Viet Cong and America launches a full-scale retaliation, authorized by the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. Battles tend to go in the favor of the North Vietnamese (and the Soviet Union) due to the guerilla tactics used against the American soldiers. In 1966, there are many battles that leave the Viet Cong at a slight deficit, but the Ho Chi Minh trail quickly replaces what they have lost.
